Eagles overcome 4-0 deficit to defeat Presbyterian

Put end to five-game slide

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored runs in the third, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings to topple Presbyterian College, 7-4, Thursday afternoon in Clinton, South Carolina. The Screaming Eagles survived a four-run second inning by the Blue Hose to end their five-game losing streak and improve their record to 6-7 on the season.

After closing the gap to just one run, senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) hit a rocket down the leftfield line to lead off the top of the sixth and tie the contest at 4-4. The Eagles took the lead three batters later when senior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) roped a shot to right center to put across fellow classmate Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin).

Kohler's hustle to turn the play into a triple paid off as he came across to score on a Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) ground-out to the shortstop, putting the Eagles on top 6-4. USI added another run in the eighth when Owen led the inning off with a homer to left center.

Junior hurler Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) threw 8 2/3 innings, giving up four runs off nine hits, to pick up the victory. Anderson struck out five and walked just two batters as he improved to 3-1 on the season.

Senior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) came on with two on in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win for the Eagles. Johnson picked up his second save of the season.

The Eagles will wrap up their spring trip with the series finale with Presbyterian tomorrow. First-pitch is slated for noon (CT). USI will return home Monday, March 17, to take on Indiana University-Southeast in a 2 p.m. contest at the USI Baseball Field.
