The University of Southern Indiana softball team knocked off Lock Haven University, 2-1, but fell to regional foe Ferris State University, 1-0, Tuesday night at the Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Florida. The Screaming Eagles are now 2-1 with the split and will face 12th-ranked Bloomsburg University as well as 23rd-ranked Ashland University today.
USI took advantage of a Lock Haven miscue in the top of the fourth inning to push across both of its runs. Junior catcher
Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) reached on an error by LHU's shortstop, Courtney Hughes, and came around to score when junior first baseman
Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) singled with one out. Tepe scored the go-ahead run when senior shortstop
Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana) recorded a single two batters later.
Junior hurler
Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) picked up the victory against Lock Haven. Emmons pitched all seven innings, giving up one run, in the first inning, off eight hits and striking out eight LHU batters. She improves to 1-0 on the season.
In their 1-0 loss to Ferris State, the Eagles stranded 10 runners, including three in the bottom of the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Freshman pitcher
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss against Ferris State despite allowing just one unearned run off six hits in seven innings of work. Grover struck out four batters and walked three as she fell to 1-1 on the season.
