The University of Southern Indiana softball team opened its 2003 campaign with a 7-3 victory over Dowling College Sunday afternoon at the Division II Rebel Spring Games in Osceola, Florida. USI's second game was washed out due to rain.
After giving up a run in the second inning, the Screaming Eagles came back and answered in a big way. USI put across six runners in the top of the fourth inning and another in the fifth before the game was ended in the sixth inning due to rain. USI had a run score in the sixth inning, but the run did not count since Dowling did not have a chance to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore outfielder
Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs batted in and junior catcher
Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) recorded a solo home run as the Eagles posted their first season-opening victory in three years.
Seniors
Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) and
Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana) each recorded a double in the victory.
Freshman hurler
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) threw five innings, giving up three runs off seven hits. Grover was able to hold on for the victory despite USI's defense committing four errors.
The Eagles (1-0) will return to action Tuesday, March 11, to take on Lock Haven University and Ferris State University. Game times are slated for 3:10 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, in Osceola, Florida.
