The #2-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team took the lead with 7:35 to play and held on to defeat Henderson State University, 72-62, Monday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI remains perfect in 2003-04 with a 7-0 record, while HSU falls for the first time this season and is 6-1.
The Reddies led the game for the first 28 minutes of the game after jumping to an early 10 point lead in the first half, 12-2. The Eagles stayed close in the first stanza, but were only able to close the lead to 36-33 at the half.
In the second half, USI slowly chipped away at the HSU leads tying the game at 43-43 with 15:02 to play in the game. The Eagles took their first lead of the game four minutes later, 48-47. After HSU retook the lead 49-48, USI used a 7-2 run to take control and never look back, outscoring the Reddies 17-12 the rest of the way.
USI had four players in double figure scoring, led by senior center
John Oden (St. Louis, Missouri) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior center
Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri), the GLVC Player of the Week, came off the bench to post 12 points, while senior forward
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) and junior guard
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) added 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The USI men's basketball team will host the second of its seven-game homestand when it welcomes the University of Illinois-Springfield Saturday, December 13, to the PAC. UIS will come to the PAC with a 6-3 record in 2003-04.
