The #2-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team set a school record with 20 three-point field goals in a 116-72 victory over the University of Illinois-Springfield. USI's record remains perfect at 8-0, while Illinois-Springfield falls to 6-4 in 2003-04.
The Screaming Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back going into the locker room with a 60-38 lead at intermission. For the half, the Eagles shot a blistering 70.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc and hitting 12 three-point bombs.
USI cooled off a little in the second half from long range, but finished the game shooting 64.5 percent from beyond the arc (20-31).
Senior guard
Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) led five Eagles in double figures with 22 points, including four three-point field goals. Junior guard
Aaron Austin (Chicago Heights, Illinois) followed Gordon with 21 points and was a perfect five-of-five from long range.
Also scoring in double figures was senior guard
Avery Queen (Moreno Valley, California), who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists freshman guard/forward
Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana), who added 13 points and junior guard
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana), who dropped in 10 points.
The USI men's basketball team continues its seven-game homestand with the USI/Sprint Challenge Friday and Saturday, December 19-20, at the PAC. Game times are 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each night. USI will play in the 7:30 p.m. contest each evening, taking on University of North Alabama Friday evening and Ferris State University Saturday night.
