Defensive collapse sends Eagles to second loss

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team suffered its second setback of the season Saturday as the #20 Quincy University Hawks pinned a 92-64 loss on the Screaming Eagles at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois.

USI (5-2, 2-2 GLVC) was on the opposite end of a 6-0 run to start the contest and could not turn the tables. The Eagles got to within three points at 17-14, but the Hawks used a 9-0 run to push their lead to double digits.

Quincy (5-2, 3-1 GLVC) shot a blistering 70 percent (21-of-30) from the floor in the first period as the Hawks extended their lead over the Eagles to as much as 26 points before heading into the locker room with a 52-29 halftime advantage.

"Quincy out played us right from the jump," USI Head Coach Rick Stein explained in his post-game radio show with WSWI's Lance Potts. "We really were never into the ball game out there and it was disappointing."

The Eagles cut the lead to 19 early in the second period, but that would be as close as USI would get as the Hawks fired back to build their lead to as many as 36 points before finishing with the 28-point win.

For the game, Quincy shot 66.7 percent compared to USI's 40 percent, while the Hawks out-rebounded the Eagles 40-23. In the paint, the Hawks dominated the Eagles, outscoring USI 48-28, including a 30-12 advantage in the first half.

Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) and junior center Andrea Engleking (Charlottsville, Indiana). Each recorded 12 points, marking the most points Engleking has scored in a USI uniform.

Senior guard/forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) added 10 points, eight of which came in the first four minutes of the contest.

QU junior forward Jessica Stuckman scored all of her 11 points in the first period, while freshman forward Alex Wieser came off the bench to record a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds.

USI will return to action Sunday, December 21, when it travels to Cancun, Mexico, to participate in the Torneo Cancun De Basquetbol. The Eagles will play Assumption College December 21 before taking on #16 Arkansas Tech University Monday, December 22.
