USI men’s basketball goes to 2-0

The #2-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team outscored Oakland City University 41-16 in the first half and 57-25 in the second half to cruise to a 98-41 win Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raised its record to 2-0 overall, while Oakland City University fell to 1-4 in 2003-04.

The Screaming Eagles, who shot 55.9 percent from the field, were led by six players scoring in double figures. Senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) and junior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) led the USI offense with 17 points and six rebounds each. Harris' 17 points also moved him into 12th all-time in scoring at USI with 1,075 career points, while his six rebounds moved him into sixth all-time in rebounding with 567 career boards.

USI senior guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) followed Harris and Holbrook with 16 points, while junior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) dropped in 14 points junior guard/forward Aaron Austin (Chicago Heights, Illinois) added 13 points and freshman guard/forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) recorded 10 points.

The Eagles also did the job on the defensive end for the second straight game, holding the Mighty Oaks to just 28.0 percent from the field for the game (14-50) and out rebounded OCU 48-20. Gordon and senior forward Clarence Chillers (Chicago, Illinois) joined Harris and Holbrook by grabbing six rebounds each.

The USI men's basketball team will open the 2003-04 GLVC campaign on the road Saturday, November 29, at Bellarmine University. Game times for the doubleheader are 4:45 p.m. (CT) for the women's game and 7 p.m. (CT) for the men's game.
