The 2nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team opened the 2003-04 GLVC season with a 71-60 victory over Bellarmine University Saturday evening in Louisville, Kentucky. USI raised its record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 1-3 overall and 0-1 GLVC.
The victory also marked the 600th win for the Screaming Eagles and win number 50 for
Head Coach Rick Herdes.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the first half, taking control with a 15-3 run and a 12 point lead with 12:43 to play before intermission. USI increased the lead to as many as 13 points before going into the locker room with a 41-32 halftime lead.
In the second half, Bellarmine closed the Eagles lead down to one, 41-40, with an 8-0 run to start the half. That is as close as the Knights would get. USI got back on track and rebuilt the lead to as many as 13 point, 62-49, with just over four minutes to play in the game.
USI was led by junior center
Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri), who had 16 points and nine rebounds. He was followed by senior forward
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois), dropped in 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The Eagles resume their four-game conference road trip with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against #12 Kentucky Wesleyan College at the Sportscenter Monday, December 1. USI men's basketball will practice 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
