Evansville, IN – University of Southern Indiana midfielder
Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) capped off Senior Day by scoring the game winner with 5:21 to play in the second "sudden victory" overtime as the Screaming Eagles defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI finishes the regular season with a 9-6-1 overall record and an 8-2-0 mark in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 6-12-1 overall, 4-5-1 GLVC.
The goal for Settles was his team-high sixth of the season and a team-best fifth game winner of 2003. He scored after UMSL made an aborted try to clear the ball and there was a scramble in the box.
The first 104 minutes was a goalkeeping dual between USI's sophomore
Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) and UMSL's senior Campbell McLaurin. Penick finished the match with five saves and picked up his fifth shutout of the year, while McLaurin made 12 saves in a losing effort.
Next for the Eagles is the GLVC Tournament that begins Sunday, November 2. USI will host an opening round match at 1 p.m. on November 2, but its seeding and opponent are still to be determined. If Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeats Lewis University on Monday evening, October 27, then USI will be the number two seed. If Lewis is victorious then USI will be the number three seed.
