USI men’s soccer advances

Screaming Eagles will play SIUE for GLVC Championship

For the first time since 1991, the University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team will play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship game after advancing on penalty kicks over 13th-ranked Lewis University Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. USI's record is now 12-7-overall, while Lewis goes to 14-5-1.

The Screaming Eagles will play Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for the GLVC Championship Sunday, November 10, in Romeoville. Game time on Sunday is 12:30 p.m. USI leads the GLVC with 10 conference crowns since the beginning of league play in 1979. The Eagles won six straight between 1979 and 1984 and another four in a row between 1988 and 1991. USI won the 1988 GLVC crown in Romeoville.

USI and Lewis battled to a 1-1 tie after 110:00 minutes (two regulation and two "sudden victory" overtime periods) of action before settling the issue on penalty kicks. USI made four of five penalty kicks, while Lewis' players only found the back of the net twice in four attempts.

The two goals were scored the second half of regulation. The Flyers got on the board first with a tally at the 69:01 mark. Lewis back Sergio Lira scored off a pass from forward Marcelo Angel to give the Flyers the early lead.

The Eagles evened the score with 2:05 to play in the match on an unassisted goal by junior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was the eighth of the season for Settles.

The bad news for the Eagles is that they will be without the services of GLVC Player of the Year Greg Henry for the championship game. The senior forward was given a red card in the second overtime period and must sit out the next contest.
