USI volleyball looking for redemption

Boehmer nearing 5,000 assists

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will be looking for a little redemption Friday when it travels to Quincy, Illinois, to take on Quincy University in a 7 p.m. match.

USI (16-6, 5-4 GLVC) saw a 10-match winning streak against the Lady Hawks fall by the wayside earlier this month when Quincy came into the Physical Activities Center and swept the Screaming Eagles, 3-0.

Since falling to Quincy, the Eagles are 3-1 and have had a 10-day layoff to prepare for a team that is second in the GLVC's Green Division. Quincy enters this week's action with a 13-8 overall record and a 5-3 mark in GLVC.

Friday's match could see USI senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) become the fifth player in GLVC history to reach 5,000 career assists. Boehmer needs just 61 assists to reach the plateau and 59 assists to reach 1,000 assists for the fourth straight season.

In the GLVC, Boehmer ranks fourth with 11.91 assists per game in 2003.

Leading the Eagles offensive attack is sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior middle hitter Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). Ellerbusch is second in the league with a .376 attacking percentage and is ninth in the GLVC with 3.30 kills per game.

Against GLVC competition, Ellerbusch is hitting .388 and is averaging 1.39 blocks per game, good enough for third in the GLVC.

Gross, who recently reached 1,000 career kills, is fourth in the league with a .327 attacking percentage and eighth in the GLVC with 3.74 kills per game. She leads the league with .45 service aces per game.

USI will return home Friday, October 31, when the Eagles host GLVC front-runner Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The Eagles wrap up their home schedule Saturday, November 1, with the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The UMSL match will be Senior Day for the Eagles.
