USI men’s soccer falls to Truman State

#3 Truman State University (11-0-0): 3 @University of Southern Indiana (7-4-0): 0

The 21st-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a hard-fought match Friday night at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles saw the third-ranked Truman State University Bulldogs slip three shots into the back of the net as they lost for the first time in eight matches.

In addition to their season-long win streak falling by the wayside, the Eagles also saw their 14-match home winning streak fall as well. The streak dated back to September 15, 2002.

For nearly 45 minutes, the Eagles stood toe-to-toe with the number one ranked team in the Central Region. However, with less than three minutes to play in the first period, TSU sophomore forward Sean Birrell slipped past USI sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles had their chances in the first period, reeling off 10 shots, six of which were on goal. However, strong play from TSU freshman goalkeeper Nate Gibson held the Eagles out of the scoring column. Gibson finished the match with seven saves.

Less than six minutes into the second period, Birrell and sophomore midfielder Martin Clayes, who led Birrell to the game's first goal, teamed to set senior forward Ricky Vigil up for the match's second goal.

Vigil returned the favor with less than 20 minutes to play in the match as he set up Birrell for the Bulldogs' third goal of the contest.

With the 3-0 loss, the Eagles fall to 7-4-0 while the Bulldogs improve to 11-0-0 on the season. USI, which is 6-0-0 in the GLVC, will return to league action Sunday, October 12, when it travels to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
