The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team was a school record 25-of-25 from the charity stripe as it defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 80-72, in Rensselaer, Indiana. USI raises its record 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while UWP falls to 10-8 overall, 5-6 GLVC.
The victory also marks the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Screaming Eagles have swept a GLVC road trip.
The Eagles received an outstanding effort from senior guard/forward
Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana), who had a team-high and a season-high 17 points. Goff biggest basket of the afternoon was a three-point field goal that capped a 9-0 run and gave USI the lead 55-54.
That 9-0 run erased a 54-45 UWP lead and propelled the Eagles offensively to outscore the Rangers 25-18 in the final seven minutes.
Goff led five players in double figures this afternoon. Junior forward
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) was second with 13 points, while senior guard
David Ragland (Evansville, Indiana), sophomore guard
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana), and sophomore forward
Dennis Coutee (Jeffersonville, Indiana) dropped in 10 points each.
The Eagles had two seven-point leads in the first half and led at the intermission, 36-33. In the second half, the Rangers held the Eagles to just eight points in the first 10 minutes of the half until USI started its come-from-behind run. USI outscored UWP in the second stanza, 44-39.
The squad returns to the friendly confines of the Physical Activities Center next week to begin a four-game homestand. The Eagles will begin the homestand with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday, January 30, followed by Quincy University Saturday, February 1. The game with Quincy will be homecoming for USI. Both games next week will begin at 7:30 p.m.
