University of Southern Indiana senior forward
Megan Fitzler (Maryland Heights, Missouri) picked the right time for her first goal of the season as the Screaming Eagles defeated 14th ranked Grand Valley State University, 1-0, in overtime Sunday afternoon at GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI's record goes to 3-0-0 overall, while GVSU falls to 3-1-0.
Fitzler scored an unassisted goal with three minutes to play in the first "sudden victory" overtime session off a restart.
It was the Eagles' defensive that forced the match into overtime as it built a wall around the goal, withstanding 16 Laker shots. USI senior goalkeeper
Aude de La Salle (France) picked up her first shutout of the season and made 12 saves in the victory.
The Lakers out shot the Eagles 16-3 and had the only four corner kicks of the match.
"The key to the match was our defense," said USI Head Coach
Bill Wilkins. "Our defense was extremely organized and shutdown a potent Grand Valley State offense and got us the shot for Megan (Fitzler).
"Megan did a great job on the restart and put the ball into the back of the net," concluded Wilkins.
The Eagles will continue the non-conference schedule at home this week, hosting Missouri Baptist College Tuesday, September 10, at Strassweg Field.
Game time has been moved to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
