USI men’s soccer shocks 17th ranked Hillsdale in overtime

University of Southern Indiana (1-2-0): 1 OT 17th ranked Hillsdale College (1-2-1): 0

University of Southern Indiana junior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) scored the Screaming Eagles first goal of the year in overtime to defeat 17th ranked Hillsdale College, 1-0, in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sunday afternoon. USI picks up its first victory of the year and is 1-2-0, while Hillsdale falls to 1-2-1.

Settles scored the only goal of the game with 7.9 seconds left in first "sudden victory" overtime. He put away the rebound of a shot by senior forward Greg Henry (France).

USI dominated the game from start to outshooting the Chargers 16-5. The Eagles also had seven corner kicks to Hillsdale's five.

Junior goalkeeper Josh Hill (Maple Park, Illinois) was brilliant in goal for the Eagles. He made three saves, posting his first shutout as an Eagle and USI's first shutout since the 2000 season.

"We deserved this victory," said USI Head Coach Dan Hogan. "We dominated Hillsdale the whole match. There were plenty of chances for our guys to score all match, but the guys started to tighten up with each missed opportunity. It had been a long time between goals and we playing the 17th ranked team in the nation.

"Hopefully this match will give us the confidence we were needing," concluded Hogan.

The next action for the Eagles will be the home opener when the University of Missouri-Rolla visits Strassweg Field Friday, September 13. Game time is 7 p.m.
