Volleyball to play tournament at Rhodes College

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will be denied the comforts of home for the next four weeks as it starts play this weekend in the Pyramid City Tournament hosted by Rhodes College and Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee. The Screaming Eagles will not play another home match until October 4 against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Eagles will play all four of their tournament games this weekend at NCAA Division III Rhodes College. USI (3-2) starts the tournament with unbeaten Rhodes College (5-0) at 3 p.m. and the University of West Alabama (5-0) at 5 p.m. Friday, September 6. The Eagles will finish the tournament Saturday, September 7, with the Mississippi University for Women (0-4) at 9 a.m. and the State University of West Georgia (0-5) at 1 p.m.

USI has won its last two matches, including the home opener over McKendree College, 3-0, on Labor Day. The win over the Bearcats was special as junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) became USI's all-time leader in assists.

Boehmer has posted 2,697 assists in two-plus seasons and is on pace to reach the NCAA elite with 5,000 assists by time her career is done at USI. This season she is averaging 11.2 per game.

One of Boehmer's best customers for her sets is senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana), another USI record setter. Wells leads the Eagles with 3.7 kills (63 in five matches), 1.2 aces, and 3.88 digs per game. She also could become the fourth player in USI history to reach 1,000 career digs during the four-match tournament this weekend.

Hot on Well's heels in hitting is sophomore Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). The second-year middle hitter is averaging 3.5 kills per game and has a team-best .331 hitting percentage.

The Pyramid City Tournament will be the final tune-up before USI starts Great Lakes Regional competition. USI will start regional play in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament Friday and Saturday, September 13-14, before opening Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the University of Indianapolis Friday, September 20.
