Wells kills record as Eagles drop two in Michigan

Senior setter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) broke the all-time school record for career kills this weekend and recorded her 1,000th career dig, but the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team dropped two of three matches in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover in Allendale, Michigan. The 1-2 record puts the Screaming Eagles at 8-4 on the season as they head into conference play next weekend.

Wells and sophomore middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) led the Eagles offensively. Wells averaged 5.25 kills and 0.92 service aces per game while Gross tapped in with 3.75 kills per game.

Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) helped the Eagle attack as she averaged 12.83 assists per game. She needs 23 assists to reach 3,000 for her career.

Senior outside hitter Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) recorded 3.75 digs per game to lead USI defensively. Wells tapped in with 3.08 digs per game while Gross and Boehmer added 2.58 and 2.42 digs, respectively.

USI used a .333 hitting percentage in game three and a .314 hitting percentage in game four to top Hillsdale College, 3-1 (31-33, 30-25, 30-23, 30-19), in its first match on Friday. Wells recorded a match-high 24 kills and 20 digs while Gross tapped in with 21 kills and a .529 hitting percentage to lead the Eagles. Hillsdale dropped to 8-3 with the loss.

After winning games one and two against Ferris State University, the Eagles found themselves up 29-26 in the third game and one point away from sweeping the match. However, FSU rebounded to record four straight points and eventually win the game 34-32.

The run proved to be a turning point in the match as FSU (9-1) defeated USI in games four and five to take the match, 3-2 (29-31, 23-30, 34-32, 30-25, 15-10). Wells recorded a match-high 27 kills while Kavanaugh tallied a career-high 26 digs to lead the Eagles.

After dropping a pair of close games to #22 Northwood University, the Eagles found themselves down 24-14 in the third game. USI rallied to tie the game at 28-28, but Northwood (11-1) came back with two points to win the match, 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-28).

Sophomore middle hitter Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) led the Eagles with 13 kills and a .529 hitting percentage. Wells broke the USI career mark for kills with her 10th kill in the match.

The Eagles will start conference play this Friday, September 20, as they travel to Indianapolis to take on the University of Indianapolis. USI will be in Rensselaer, Indiana, Saturday as it takes on Saint Joseph's College.
