USI splits first weekend in conference play

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball had three players reach milestones this weekend, but could only manage a split in the first weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Screaming Eagles defeated the University of Indianapolis Friday night 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-21), but fell Saturday afternoon to Saint Joseph's College 3-0 (30-17, 30-28, 32-30). USI's record goes to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC.

In the victory over Indianapolis, junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) became the first USI player to reach 3,000 assists with the 23rd of her 44 assists. Boehmer, USI's all-time leading setter, set three players into double figure kills against the Greyhounds.

Leading the way for the Eagles' victory was senior outside hitter Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana), who had 16 of USI's 61 kills. Senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) followed Kavanaugh with 14 kills of her own, while sophomore middle hitter Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) added 10.

Wells reached a milestone of her own in the loss to SJC, becoming the first USI player to reach 1,500 kills. She led the Eagles with 15 kills and 19 digs in the loss, while Gross knocked down 10 kills of her own. Kavanaugh followed Wells in the digs category with 15 and cracked the USI top five all-time with 920 in four seasons.

USI will conclude its nearly month long road trip with a GLVC match in Quincy University Friday, September 27, at 7 p.m. The Eagles will return to the friendly confines of the Physical Activities Center Friday, October 4, when they welcome the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 7 p.m. match.
