USI splits on Saturday

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team finished its first weekend of action by splitting on Saturday and finishing the University of North Alabama Tournament with a 2-2 record. USI fell in the early match on Saturday to the sixth-ranked University of North Alabama 3-0 (30-15, 30-25, 30-27), but defeated Henderson State University, 3-1 (19-30, 30-15, 30-28, 30-22), in its final match.

Sophomore middle hitter Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) led the Eagles in the win over Henderson State by tying a career-high with 20 kills. She was joined in double-figures by senior outside hitters Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) with 14 kills each and sophomore middle hitter Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) with 10 kills.

Wells also did the job for USI defensively, posting 22 digs in the victory.

Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) continued her pursuit of the USI all-time record for assist with 53 versus HSU. Boehmer needs just 39 more assists to take over the top spot at USI.

Gross also led the Eagles in the loss to top-ten North Alabama, posting 16 kills and the only USI player to get into double figures for kills. Wells led USI with 15 digs in the three-game loss, while Boehmer had 31 assists.

The next action for the Eagles will be Monday, September 2 (Labor Day) for the home opener against McKendree College. Match time at the Physical Activities Center will be 5 p.m.
