USI track and field runs at Washington Invite

Farmer, Byrne make it back-to-back championships

For the second consecutive weekend University of Southern Indiana track and field junior distance runner Jenny Farmer (Princeton, Indiana) and sophomore distance runner Joey Byrne (Georgetown, Indiana) have won individual championships. The Screaming Eagles competed in the Washington University Invite Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.

Farmer took home individual titles in the women's 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs. She finished first in the 3,000 meters at the Gerald England Track and Field Invitational a week ago in Indianapolis. Farmer recorded a time of 2:17.87 in the 800 meters and a time of 4:40.63 in the 1,500 meters en route to her second and third championships of the outdoor season.

Byrne, who won the 5,000-meter run at the GE Track and Field Invitational a week ago, once again won the men's 5,000 meters after posting a top time of 14:49.50. It is the second time this spring Byrne has won an event in the 2002 outdoor season.

Other top finishers USI included freshman distance runner Casey Schneider (New Salisbury, Indiana) and senior distance runner Jeff Rumsey (Rising Sun, Indiana). Schneider finished second in the women's 3,000-meter after posting a time of 10:39.24 while Rumsey finished second in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase after recording a time of 9:32.52. No team results were posted for the meet.

The Eagles will compete at the Little State Championships in Greencastle, Indiana this Saturday, April 13 before heading to Rensselear, Indiana to compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships April 19-20.
