Eagle hurlers lift USI softball to sweep of Quincy

The University of Southern Indiana softball team gave up just one run in two games this afternoon as the Screaming Eagles swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Quincy University at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Indiana. USI, which topped the Lady Hawks 6-0 in game one and 2-1 in game two, improves to 18-12 overall and 8-5 in the GLVC.

Senior pitcher Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) recorded her second-consecutive shutout—her third this season—as she improved to 11-6 on the season. Garnett spread 6 hits throughout 7 innings, striking out 3 batters and allowing just one walk in the first game.

Eagle hitters supplied plenty of offense for Garnett as they exploded for six runs off eight hits. USI took advantage of a pair of Quincy errors in the bottom of the second inning to push its first run of the game across the plate.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning and the bases loaded, sophomore second baseman Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana) lined a single into leftfield to score sophomore catcher Kristin Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana). Junior shortstop Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana) followed Biggs with a base-clearing double to left-centerfield that put the Eagles up 5-0.

USI added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as it cruised to the 6-0 victory. Sophomore hurler Julie LeMaire (1-11) took the loss for the Lady Hawks in game one as she gave up all six runs, five of which were earned.

Junior pitcher/centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) went the distance for USI, allowing just one run off five hits, as she picked up the victory in game two. Bowling struck out five batters and gave up just two walks as she improved 6-6 on the season.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) recorded a leadoff double to leftfield. Bowling helped her cause out as she followed Tepe with an RBI single to centerfield, tying the game at 1-1.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tepe singled to centerfield to drive in Biggs, who had reached on a base-on-balls, and give USI a 2-1 lead.

Bowling closed the door on the Lady Hawks as she retired six of the last seven batters Quincy brought to the plate. Freshman right-hander Erin Moulton (0-8) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs and nine hits.

USI will host Brescia University this Tuesday, April 9, in a pair of make-up games from a doubleheader that was postponed back in March due to weather conditions. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the USI Softball Field. The Lady Hawks fall to 1-20 overall and 0-8 in the GLVC.
