The University of Southern Indiana baseball team could not overcome defensive problems, dropping a doubleheader to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Cougars (17-15 overall, 5-5 GLVC) defeated USI (14-17 overall, 7-8 GLVC) 7-4 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
The two teams move the four-game series to Edwardsville, Illinois, on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. The squads will play a nine-inning conference game, followed by a seven-inning non-conference game on Sunday.
USI committed five costly errors in the doubleheader, giving up five unearned runs.
In game one, USI allowed five runs in the top of the seventh to fall 7-4. The Eagles had led throughout the game, scoring three in the third and one in the sixth, to take a 4-2 lead into the final innings. The Cougars scored five times against three USI pitchers in their final at-bat for the victory.
In the second game, the Cougars jumped out in front with three-unearned runs in the third inning creating a deficit the Eagles could not comeback from. USI cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but could not mount another threat in the final six innings.
On the mound, USI had strong performances from senior right-handerÂ
Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore right-handerÂ
Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) in game two, and junior left-handerÂ
Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) in the opening game.
Anderson went six innings in the game one no-decision, allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned), while striking out three. Arnold went 71/3 in game two for the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) and eight hits.
Neel finished game two for Arnold, pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing only two hits. He did a splendid job pitching out of a two-on/one out jam in the ninth to keep the game close.
The next home game for the Eagles will be Wednesday, April 17, when Kentucky Wesleyan College visits the USI Baseball Field for a noon doubleheader.
