University of Southern Indiana senior right-hander Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) pitched a gem of a game on Sunday, earning the Screaming Eagles a split with Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI, behind Arnold's arm, won the nightcap 7-3, while SJC won the opener 8-5.

USI, which lost a chance to be in the GLVC Tournament with the game one loss, goes to 21-27 overall and 12-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while SJC's record is 25-23-2 overall, 13-13 GLVC, after Sunday's doubleheader.

In the game two victory, Arnold hurled his second complete games in three starts to raise his record to 4-5 overall. The senior went nine innings and allowed eight hits, three runs (two earned), and three walks.

Arnold has been a lucky charm for the Eagles in his last seven appearances. USI is 6-1 when Arnold pitches, while the right-hander has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.34 ERA in six starts.

Offensively, the Eagles supported Arnold with three players getting multiple hits. Senior centerfielder Marcus Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) and designated hitter Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) were joined by junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) with two hits each. Branson also celebrated Senior Day by driving in two runs in the 7-3 victory.

The first game saw the Eagles fly out to a 4-1 lead, a margin they held until the top of the fifth when the Pumas scored seven times. Junior left-hander Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) picked up his first loss in relief of junior right-handed starter Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky). Stanisz falls to 3-1 this spring.

USI junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) and Konopacki led USI in game one with three hits each.

The Eagles will finish the 2002 regular season in Erie, Pennsylvania, when the participate in the Mercyhurst Tournament Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5.
