EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team received clutch pitching performances from freshman left-handerÂ
Matt Antey (Newburgh, Indiana) and sophomore right-handerÂ
Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) in a doubleheader sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won game one 2-0 and completed the sweep with a 10-5 victory in the nightcap.
USI raised its record to 18-23 overall and 10-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while KWC falls to 18-18 overall, 7-15 GLVC.
In game one, Antey went the distance, allowing just three hits and striking out four in seven innings of work. Antey did not allow a KWC runner to advance past second base the entire game and raised his record to 2-2.
In game two, Neel struck out the first two batters he faced and got a third to hit into a force out as he rescued the Eagles from a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning. Neel, who did not figure in the conclusion of the game, pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out four before being relieved in the ninth.
USI junior left-handerÂ
Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) picked up his third win of the season, throwing 2 1/3 innings in relief of senior right-handed starterÂ
Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana). Stanisz (3-0) allowed three hits and one run to earn the win.
Offensively, junior catcherÂ
Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) led the way for the Eagles, going five for seven in the doubleheader, scoring three times and driving in three runs during the second game. He was followed by junior first basemanÂ
Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), who had four hits in the sweep, driving in both of USI's runs in the first game and two more in the nightcap.
The Eagles will return to the road this weekend when they travel to the University of Indianapolis for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21. Start time both days is noon and can be heard live on WSWI AM820.
The final four-game homestand will begin Thursday, April 25, when USI hosts Oakland City University for a 3 p.m. contest and conclude Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's College.
