Senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) recorded a pair of shutouts to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a sweep of Saint Joseph's College (2-0, 4-0) this afternoon at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The wins extend the Screaming Eagles' win streak to 10 games and improve their record to 24-12 overall and 10-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

As USI honored its two seniors, Garnett and third baseman Molly Blackford (Newburgh, Indiana), Garnett honored USI's win streak with 14 scoreless innings of work and a pair of victories that upped her record to 15-6 on the season. The two shutouts marked the fifth and sixth consecutive shutouts that Garnett has recorded.

For the day, Garnett gave up just six hits and walked just two batters while striking out eight. Garnett has now pitched 45 consecutive scoreless innings and is just 6 1/3 innings away from tying former USI standout Amy Stetler's school record of 51 1/3 consecutive shutout innings.

USI wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard in game one as leadoff hitter Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Florida) scored on a Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) one-out double in the bottom of the first-inning. Junior shortstop Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana) singled to leftfield in the bottom of the sixth inning to send home USI's second run of the game. The Eagles recorded six hits as they went on to the 2-0 victory.

SJC's Erika Cheslek (6-10) was charged with the loss in game one after giving up the two runs and seven walks in six innings of work.

Rain delays brought the second game to a screeching halt as play was suspended for 16 minutes in the middle of the second inning and 30 minutes in the bottom of the third inning.

The rain seemed to have no effect on USI's bats, though, as the Eagles exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second inning. After Duell picked up her second RBI of the day to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, junior centerfielder Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) cleared the base path, which was full of Eagles, with a double to left-centerfield. Bowling's hit gave USI a 4-0 lead and all the offense the Eagles would need.

USI hammered out eight hits in the contest as went on to the 4-0 win. SJC's Beth Nix (4-4) was charged the loss as she surrendered all four runs and seven hits in four innings of work. The Lady Pumas fall 14-20 overall, 3-7 in the GLVC, with the losses.

The Eagles will wrap up their 2002 home schedule this Wednesday, April 17, as they play host to McKendree College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. USI will play in the Great Lakes Regional Tournament next weekend (Friday, April 19 – Sunday, April 21) in South Bend, Indiana.
