The University of Southern Indiana baseball team broke a seven-game losing streak with a 12-2 victory over Northern Kentucky University in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI's record goes to 15-22 overall and 8-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while NKU goes to 18-19 and 9-5 GLVC after the split.

A pair of seniors, catcher Brian Scroggins (Edwardsville, Illinois) and right-handed starter Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana), led the Screaming Eagles to victory in game two.

Scroggins had four hits in five plate appearances, driving in three runs and scoring two more. Junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin), who had two doubles, and senior centerfielder Marcus Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana), who smacked a two-run home run in USI's five-run fifth, joined Scroggins with multiple hits

Arnold (2-5) went the distance on the mound for the Eagles, throwing his best game of the season. He allowed just seven hits and two runs (one earned) in nine innings for his first complete game of the spring.

USI's offense, which had stalled in the last three games, posted two runs in both the first and third innings five in the fifth and three in the seventh for the victory.

In the 4-1 game one loss, the Norse scored all of the runs they would need in the first inning to defeat the Eagles. Junior right-hander Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky) went the distance for the Eagles and took the loss. Baker (2-4) allowed four runs (one earned) and seven hits (three coming in the first inning) over six innings of action.

Offensively, junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) led the Eagles with two hits and drove in junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) for USI's only run.

The teams will finish the three-game series in Highland Heights, Kentucky, Sunday, April 14, at 11 a.m. (CT). The Eagles will return to Evansville to play their first home games in 10 days when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17. Game time on Wednesday is noon.
