The University of Southern Indiana baseball team came up just short in both games of a doubleheader at Bellarmine University Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 and 2-1. USI's record goes to 14-20 overall, 7-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

In the first game, USI squandered a strong outing by junior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) by giving up two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of errors. Anderson (4-2) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, one earned. He also scattered eight hits and struck out two.

The top of USI's line-up collected seven of the Eagles' 10 hits. Junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) led the way with three hits, while junior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) each picked up a pair of hits.

Game two saw USI's offense stall as the Eagles were only able to pick up three hits. The Eagles' only run came in the second inning when senior catcher Brian Scroggins (Edwardsville, Illinois) scored on a triple by senior third baseman Justin Ambs (Zionsville, Indiana).

USI had a strong pitching performance by freshman left-hander Matt Antey (Newburgh, Indiana), who went six-plus innings, allowing eight hits and two runs. Antey (1-2) also struck out five Knight hitters.

The Eagles will return to the road on Thursday, April 11, traveling to Oakland City University for a 2 p.m. contest. USI resumes GLVC action on Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, against Northern Kentucky University for a three-game series. Game time on Saturday and Sunday is 11 a.m. (CT).
