The University of Southern Indiana baseball team won in Georgia, but stumbled in South Carolina in a rare USI doubleheader that was played across two states on Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles defeated Augusta State University, 7-3, in Georgia and lost to the University of South Carolina-Aiken, 8-4.
The Eagles take their record to 4-6 overall, while ASU falls to 16-5 and USCA goes to 12-8.
Trailing 1-0 after three innings, USI outscored the Jaguars 7-2 in the next three innings for the victory.
On the mound, junior left-handerÂ
Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) got his second win of the year, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs (two earned), and striking out three. Junior left-handerÂ
Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) got the save for the Eagles, pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and two walks with a strike out. Anderson goes to 2-1 on the season, while the save was the first of the year for Stanisz.
At the plate, junior first basemanÂ
Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) led the team going three-for-four with a pair of runs scored and a RBI, while junior designated hitter
Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) was two-for-two with two runs scored.
In the loss to USCA, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and led 4-2 after five-and-a-half innings of action. The Pacers, after tying the scored in the seventh, broke the tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth for the margin of victory.
USI had a strong performance on the mound by junior right-handerÂ
Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky), who started and went 5 1/3 innings. Baker allowed eight hits and three earned runs, striking out four. Junior right-handerÂ
Daniel Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), who is 0-1, took the loss, allowing three of the four runs in the eighth inning.
At the plate, USI had three players with multiple hits. Senior catcherÂ
Brian Scroggins (Edwardsville, Illinois) led the way for the Eagles, going two-for-five with a solo home run, while senior centerfielderÂ
Marcus Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) was two-for-four with a run scored and Konopacki was two-for-four.
The Eagles will resume the spring trip back at Augusta State University for a 1 p.m. (CT) single game Wednesday, March 6. USI will return Aiken, South Carolina, to play USCA again Thursday night, March 8, at 6 p.m. (CT). The next home game for the Eagles will be Tuesday, March 12, when they host Brescia University in a doubleheader.
