USI splits doubleheader with Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in game one and winning 16-11 in the nightcap. USI's record goes to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis goes to 15-10 overall, 4-3 GLVC.

In the game two victory, junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles with three doubles, five RBIs, and three runs scored. Junior shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) and junior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) joined Schiff with three hits each. Perkins scored four times and drove in two more, while Kohler scored a run and drove in another.

Junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) capped off USI's four-run seventh with a two-run home run to put the game away for the Eagles.

USI junior left-hander Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) got the win in relief, blanking the Flyers for three innings and striking out four. Stanisz is 2-0 in his first year with the Eagles.

The first game of the day saw the Flyers score a run in the bottom the seventh to defeat USI, 4-3. Freshman left-hander Matt Antey (Newburgh, Indiana) got the no-decision for USI, going five innings and allowing three hits, three runs, and striking out five. Sophomore right-hander Nathan Esche (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles, going 1 1/3 innings allowing two hits and one run. Esche is 1-1 this spring.

USI will return home before going to Kentucky Wesleyan College on Monday, April 1, to play the Panthers in a rescheduled 3 p.m. contest. The next home game for the Eagles will be Wednesday, April 3, when they play a doubleheader with the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Game time for the doubleheader is noon.
