Eagles power past the Knights

@Southern Indiana (11-12, 4-3 GLVC): 4 Bellarmine (9-10, 3-4 GLVC): 1

University of Southern Indiana senior designated hitter Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and junior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) combined for a pair of two-run home runs in the Screaming Eagles' 4-1 victory over Bellarmine University Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI's record goes to 11-12 overall and 4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Bellarmine falls to 9-10 overall, 3-4 GLVC.

Branson was the first to go over the leftfield wall, giving USI a 2-0 lead in the second inning. He drove in junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin), who had walked to start the second frame for USI. The home run was the first of the year for Branson.

Bellarmine pulled to within a run with a tally in the fourth inning before Kohler joined Branson in going over the leftfield fence in the bottom half of the inning. Kohler also knocked in Owen in hammering his first home run of the season.

Junior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) led USI on the mound, picking up his team-high fourth victory of the spring. Anderson, 4-1 in his first year with USI, went 7 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run and three walks while striking out four batters.

Senior right-hander Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) relieved Anderson in the eighth inning, going two-thirds of an inning. Arnold gave way to junior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana), who finished the game for the Eagles and picked up his first save of the year.

USI will resume GLVC action with a three-game series at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, Friday and Saturday, March 29-30. The Eagles and the Flyers are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday. Game time both days is noon.
