USI baseball splits GLVC doubleheader with UWP

@University of Southern Indiana (10-12 overall, 3-3 GLVC): 4, 3
University of Wisconsin-Parkside (4-13 overall, 1-5 GLVC): 3, 7

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana split a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon at the USI Baseball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles (10-12 overall, 3-3 GLVC) won game one, 4-3, but fell victim to three errors in game two as they lost 7-3.

In game one, junior hurler Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky) threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up just 3 runs, 2 earned, off 6 hits. However, after giving up the tying run in the top of the sixth inning, Baker gave way to junior pitcher/infielder Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana).

Johnson got out of a jam in the sixth inning and retired five of the six batters he faced en route to his first victory of the season. Senior infielder Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) went 2-of-3 from the plate including a double and a pair of first-inning RBI.

With the score knotted at three in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles got leadoff hitter Marcus Renn (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) aboard on a base-on-balls. A stolen base combined with an RBI double to right field by junior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), and the Eagles found themselves with a 4-3 lead and eventually a 4-3 win.

Despite giving up just one earned run in the second game of the doubleheader, senior pitcher Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) was charged with loss, dropping him to 1-4 on the season. Arnold spread six hits throughout seven innings, but errors led to five runs.

USI had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as it had the bases loaded with just one out. However, a 4-6-3 double play ended the Eagles rally. UWP (4-13 overall, 1-5 GLVC) added two more runs in the top of the ninth to put the contest out of reach for the Eagles.

The Eagles will take a break from conference play this Tuesday, March 26, as they travel to Oakland City, Indiana to take on Oakland City University in a 2 p.m. single game. USI will host Bellarmine University a day later for a nine-inning affair at the USI Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
