EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Junior hurler Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) recorded 13 strikeouts and gave up just one base-on-balls to lead the University of Southern Indiana baseball team to a 9-4 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon at the USI Baseball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles improve to 9-11 overall, 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Rangers fall to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the GLVC.

USI jumped out to a quick four-run lead after pounding out six hits in the first inning. Junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) started the USI scoring attack with a double down the leftfield line to drive in junior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana).

Junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) followed Schiff with an RBI double to left-centerfield, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage with one out in the bottom of the first. Two batters later, Owen would complete the Eagle offensive in the first inning as he came around to score off a single by junior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri).

UWP came back to tie the contest in the top of the second after knocking out five straight singles to open the inning. With Anderson struggling at the mound, USI Head Coach Mike Goedde headed out to the mound to talk to his junior lefthander. Anderson settled down after the meeting to record three straight outs and get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the second inning to score three runs with two outs. Konopacki got the rally going with a double to left-centerfield and Schiff followed RBI single to push Konopacki across the plate.

A throwing error by UWP's shortstop Andy Garms kept the inning alive and saw Schiff cross the plate for the second run of the inning. Owen, who reached on the error, scored USI's third run of the inning off a Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) single.

The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and another in the bottom of the eighth inning.

While the Eagle bats where producing runs, Anderson settled down to retire 24 of the last 27 batters he faced, including the last 11 batters of the game. His 13 strikeouts were one short of a school record for strikeouts in a single game.

For the game, Anderson gave up 4 runs (three earned) and allowed just 8 hits as he improved to 3-1 on the season. UWP's Joel Weaver (0-3) was charged with the loss after giving up 8 hits and 5 runs, four of which were unearned, in seven innings of relief work.

Offensively, Schiff went 3-of-4 from the plate, including a pair of doubles, with a game-high three RBI and two runs scored. Owen also knocked in a pair of runs and had a double while Konopacki recorded a double and scored three times.

USI will wrap up its three-game series against UWP with a doubleheader tomorrow at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
