Quincy (12-8, 2-1 GLVC): 6 @Southern Indiana (8-11, 1-2 GLVC): 5

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team allowed five unearned runs in losing to Quincy University, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles fall to 8-11 overall and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks go to 12-8 overall, 2-1 GLVC.

USI freshman left-hander Matt Antey (Newburgh, Indiana) saw his record fall to 1-1 overall after allowing six runs, one earned, in 4 2/3 innings on the mound. Antey also gave up seven Quincy hits, but struck out six in a losing effort. Senior right-hander Steve Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles, allowing five hits and striking out three.

At the plate, USI junior shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) and senior third baseman Brian Branson (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) led the Eagles with multiple hits. Perkins was two-for-three with two runs scored, while Branson was two-for-four with an RBI.

Junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) continued to be USI's top RBI man, knocking in two more today. He has a team-high 20 RBIs in 18 games.

The Eagles bounced back from a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. USI took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth, but Quincy put four runs on the board in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good at 6-3. USI rallied in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 6-5, but that was all the Eagles would get.

The Eagles tried once again to rally in the eighth with runners at the corners with nobody out. The rally stalled after the Hawks converted a strikeout-caught stealing double play.

USI will finish the four-game homestand on Tuesday, March 19, when it hosts Indiana University-Southeast in a 2 p.m. contest. The next GLVC game will be against Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday, March 20, in Owensboro, Kentucky. Game time Wednesday is 3 p.m.
