EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team earned a split with Quincy University on the opening day of Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball action at the USI Baseball Field Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles fell in game one 2-1, but bounced back in game two for a 3-1 victory.

USI's record goes to 8-10 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, while Quincy moves to 11-8, 1-1 GLVC.

Junior right-hander Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky) led the Eagles in game two, earning his second win of the year. Baker went the distance for the Eagles, allowing five hits and one unearned run in seven innings. The right-hander, who is 2-1 this spring, also posted seven strikeouts.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a tally in the bottom of the fourth, but Quincy rallied with a run of its own in the fifth. USI took the lead for good, 3-1, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by junior designated hitter Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) and junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin).

The first game of the afternoon saw the Hawks and the Eagles go into extra innings before Quincy picked-up the 2-1 win.

The Eagles once again scored first with manufactured a run in the first inning, but the Hawks evened the score with a run in the fourth.

Johnson, who had pitched the Eagles out of a bases-loaded and nobody out jam in the eighth, took the loss for the Eagles on an unearned run in the ninth. Johnson, a right-hander who is 0-2 this spring, had relieved senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana), who started the game.

Anderson went the first seven-plus innings, allowing eight hits, one run, and struck out seven in the no-decision.

Junior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) led USI offensively in the two games with four hits in five at-bats and scoring three of USI's four runs on Saturday. Junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) also had fine doubleheader at the plate with three hits in six at-bats, driving in two runs and scoring another.

The Eagles and the Hawks will play the deciding game of the three-game series Sunday, March 17, at the USI Baseball Field. Game time is noon. USI will resume non-conference action on Tuesday, March 19, when it hosts Indiana University-Southeast in a 2 p.m. contest.
