Eagles sweep Brescia at USI

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader from Brescia University, 11-9 and 13-3, at the USI Baseball Field Tuesday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles, who have won three in a row, raised their record to 7-8 overall, while Brescia falls to 2-14.

In game one, the Eagles had to come from behind twice to defeat the Bearcats 11-9. USI spotted Brescia four runs to start the game before scoring seven in the third to take the lead 7-3. The Bearcats came back to score four more unanswered runs, two in the fifth and two in the sixth, to retake the lead 8-7. The Eagles responded with a four-run sixth inning to take the lead for good at 11-8.

Senior third baseman Justin Ambs (Zionsville, Indiana) led the Eagles' comeback by going three-for-four with three RBIs. Senior shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) joined Ambs in getting multiple hits, going two-for-three with two runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound for the Eagles, junior left-hander Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) picked up the win in one inning of relief pitching, while sophomore left-hander Matt Antey (Newburgh, Indiana) got his first save of the season. Junior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) started and got the no-decision.

Anderson went the first five innings and allowed six runs, five of which were unearned.

In game two, it was the Screaming Eagles from start to finish as USI won 13-3. The Eagles posted three runs in the first, four in the second, and one in the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead after the first three frames.

Junior right-hander Lonnie Baker (Lexington, Kentucky) got his first win as an Eagle to lead the squad. Baker went five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out three for the victory.

At the plate, junior first baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and junior right-fielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) had the big hits for the Eagles. Konopacki had a three-run home run in the second inning, while Owen had a solo shot in the fifth.

Junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) posted three hits and scored three times, while freshman third baseman Eric Briggs (Newburgh, Indiana) had two hits included his first as a collegiate.

The next action for the Eagles will be Wednesday, March 13, at Murray State University. The solo contest will start at 2 p.m. USI will open Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday and Sunday, March 16-17, with a three-game series against Quincy University. Start time both days is noon.
