USI’s tournament bid blocked by Indianapolis

Indianapolis (7-10-0, 4-6-0 GLVC): 3 @Southern Indiana (8-9-0, 3-7-0 GLVC): 2

In what was essentially a play-in game for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, the University of Southern Indiana was knocked out by the University of Indianapolis, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 8-9-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the GLVC, while the Greyhounds go to 7-10-0 overall, 4-6-0 GLVC.

In a match that went back and forth, it was the Greyhounds who scored first and last. Indianapolis started the scoring at the 20:13 mark to take a 1-0 before USI tied the match 1:22 later with the first of two goals by sophomore midfielder Courtney Reeder (Carbondale, Indiana). Reeder's goal was unassisted at 21:35.

Indianapolis retook the lead at 23:20 and led at halftime 2-1.

Reeder tied the game, 2-2, with 33:09 to play in the game off a pass by freshman back Brooklyn Gant (Evansville, Indiana). The goals were the sixth and seventh of the season for Reeder, tying her for the team lead in goals scored. The assist was the second of the year for Gant.

The score remained tied 2-2 until the 85:52 when Indianapolis junior forward Jenna Silverman connected with the back of the USI net for the game-winner and a 3-2 victory.

The Screaming Eagles will finish the 2002 season with a non-conference match Wednesday, October 30, when they host McKendree College. Match time is 5 p.m. at Strassweg Field.
