The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to defeat the University of Indianapolis, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles (10-7-0 overall, 7-3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) secured the fourth seed and a first-round home match in the GLVC Tournament, scheduled to begin Wednesday, November 6, with the win.

It marks the first time since 1995 that the Eagles have recorded 10 wins in a season. The 1995 season was the last time USI hosted a GLVC playoff game.

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first period, senior midfielder Duncan Bray (Shetland, Scotland) used a pass from fellow classmate Greg Henry (Troyes, France) in the 63rd minute of play to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The goal was Bray's seventh of the season.

Looking for some insurance, Henry booted a ball in toward the box that looked as if it was intended for senior midfielder Shawn Sloan (St. Peters, Missouri). Sloan could not connect on the ball, but junior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) was in position to knock the ball into the back of the net.

Settles's seventh goal of the 2002 season, which came 11:28 to play in the contest, gave USI a 2-0 commanding 2-0 lead. Henry was credited with an assist on both goals.

Thanks to some solid play by senior back Steve Hendrickson (Granite City, Illinois), junior back Brian Peroutka (St. Louis, Missouri), and freshman back Greg Mitchum (Louisville, Kentucky), the Eagles were able to hold Indianapolis's attack to six shots, two of which were on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) made a save in each half to record his team-high fourth shutout of the season and raise his record to 8-3-0.

The Eagles will close out the 2002 regular season by hosting McKendree College this Wednesday, October 30, in a 7:30 p.m. match at Strassweg Field. USI will host fifth-seeded Quincy University to open the GLVC Tournament Wednesday, November 6. Kickoff is to be announced.

The loss drops Indianapolis's record to 3-11-3 overall and 3-7-0 in the GLVC.
