After playing to a scoreless tie in the first period of play, the University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team exploded for four goals in the second period to defeat Saint Joseph's College, 4-2, at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles improve to 9-7-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Pumas fall to 5-12-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the GLVC.

USI struck first in the contest when senior midfielder Duncan Bray (Shetland, Scotland) used a feed from fellow classmate Greg Henry (Troyes, France) to put the ball in the back of the net.

It looked as if the Eagles had put the game away when junior forward Scott Henderson (Evansville, Indiana) came off the bench to score USI's second goal of the contest and put the Eagles up 2-0 with 21 minutes to play. Henderson got the opportunity from Henry and senior midfielder Nick Ingalls (Greenfield, Indiana).

Unfortunately for USI, the Pumas had other plans as they scored at the 75 minute and 80 minute marks of the match to knot things up at two goals each. SJC's senior defenseman/midfielder Justin Fox used a feed from sophomore forward Paul Ryder to score the Pumas' first goal of the contest. Ryder added the second exactly five minutes later to tie the match at 2-2.

With USI's chances of hosting a first-round GLVC playoff game in jeopardy, senior midfielder John Havill (Washington, Indiana) answered the call. Havill used an assist from Bray, less than two minutes after SJC tied the contest, to put the Eagles up 3-2 with 8:10 left in regulation.

Junior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) put the match out of reach with an unassisted goal at the 82:59 mark of the game.

As a team, the Eagles had 29 shots, 17 of which were on goal. USI could not take advantage of the opportunities in the first period as it had seven corner kicks and missed on 17 shots.

Defensively for USI, freshman goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) continued his bid for GLVC "Freshman of the Year" honors. Penick played all 90 minutes as he raised his record to 6-3-0 on the season.

The Eagles will close out their 2002 GLVC schedule this Sunday at Strassweg Field. USI hosts the University of Indianapolis in a match that is set to kickoff at noon. Sunday is Senior Day for the Eagles.

USI will close out the 2002 regular season Wednesday, October 30, when McKendree College comes to call. Match time is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
