USI volleyball returns home to face Quincy

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will return to the friendly confines of the Physical Activities Center this Saturday, October 19, when it faces Quincy University. The Screaming Eagles enter the contest on the heels of a four-match winning streak and are 15-6 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

USI defeated Quincy, 3-0, at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois, back in September and is looking to extend its winning streak over the Lady Hawks to nine matches. Quincy enters this weekend's action with a 9-8 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the GLVC.

During USI's eight-match winning streak against Quincy, the Eagles have won 24 games to the Lady Hawks' five.

Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) is setting up an Eagle attack that has posted a .300 attacking percentage in its last nine matches. Boehmer has averaged 13.2 assists per game during that span and will be counted upon to continue that trend when USI takes the court Saturday.

In USI's last match with Quincy, Boehmer recorded 41 assists and led USI to a .295 attacking percentage.

Boehmer's top target against Quincy was senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana). Wells recorded 17 kills and 17 digs in USI's first meeting with Quincy and enters Saturday's match with a team-high 4.39 kills and 3.91 digs per game.

Like Boehmer, Wells has picked up her efforts as of late. During USI's current win-streak, Wells has recorded 4.82 kills, 1.91 service aces, and 4.36 digs per game. In addition, Wells is hitting .424 in USI's last four matches.

Wells is not Boehmer's only option as senior outside hitter Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) and sophomore middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) have been offensive and defensive threats for the Eagles this season.

Kavanaugh recorded 11 kills, 12 digs, 4 service aces, and a .369 attacking percentage in USI's previous meeting with Quincy. For the season, she is second on the team and fifth in the GLVC with 3.47 digs per game.

Gross has been USI's most consistent player this season. She is fourth in the GLVC with a team-high .333 attacking percentage and 11th in the league with 3.39 kills per game. Gross also is 20th in the conference with 2.57 digs per game.

As of Friday morning, the Eagles are a half-match ahead of SIU Edwardsville for the top spot in the GLVC Green Division. Overall, USI is just a game-and-a-half back of Lewis University for the top spot in the GLVC and just a half-game behind Northern Kentucky for second in the GLVC.

The Eagles were ranked ninth in the latest NCAA II Great Lakes Regional rankings. Saturday's match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
