The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball saw its eight-game winning streak come to a halt at the hands of Saint Joseph's College, 92-87, in Rensselaer, Indiana, Saturday afternoon. USI falls to 13-5 overall, 7-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while SJC goes to 4-13, 1-10 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles trailed for almost the whole game, due mostly in part to 18 turnovers. USI fought back from deficits of as many as six points in the first half, trailing 42-36 at the half.

The Pumas built a 15-point lead, 78-63, in the second half before the Eagles awoke for a 17-2 run to tie the game 80-80 with 3:30 to play. SJC bounced right back to score four unanswered points to regain the lead and never looked back. USI had chances to tie and/or take the lead in the final minutes, but could not get the ball to fall.

Offensively for the Eagles, senior guard Wes Attebury (Evansville, Indiana) led the way for USI with 18 points. Sophomore forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Indiana) followed for the Eagles with 17 points, while freshman guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) had 15 points, 14 in the first half junior guard David Ragland (Evansville, Indiana), 14 points (all in the second half) and senior center Ronnie Griffin (Louisville, Kentucky), 10 points (all in the second half).

"The game was lost in the first half with 18 turnovers," said USI Head Coach Rick Herdes. "We did not take care of the basketball and tied to make everything up in one pass. We only had four turnovers in the second half and outscored them.

"If you don't come mentally prepared and do the things you have to do every day, you are not going to win basketball games," continued Herdes. "The champions get up for every game and that is not what we did today. Saint Joseph's, which averages 68 points, scored 92 points today."

The Eagles will return to the Physical Activities Center to begin a four-game homestand, starting Thursday, January 24, when Northern Kentucky University comes in for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
