The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team exploded for six goals in Saturday's victory over Lincoln University, 6-2, at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles raised their record 3-1-0 overall, their best start since 1999 when USI was 4-1-1.
The six goals were the most by a USI squad since defeating Lincoln Memorial University at Strassweg, 7-0, in 1997.
Leading the way for the Eagles was sophomore forward
Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana/Memorial), who had three goals, including the game winner this afternoon. Settles, who also posted an assist in the victory, leads USI offensively this season with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Settles' game winning goal came in the first half at 34:22 with the score tied 1-1. He put away the rebounding shot of freshman forward Matt Manning (Franklin, Tennessee) to make the score 2-1. Manning, who received an assist on the play, put the game away five minutes later at 39:50 with his first goal of the season to make the score 3-1.
Settles was followed offensively by senior forward
Ed Pieper (St. Louis, Missouri). Piper, who is second on the team with eight points on two goals and four assists, scored a goal and dished out three assists this afternoon.
