The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team concluded action at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Volleyball Tournament by dropping a pair on Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles, who begin the season 1-3, lost to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 3-1 (22-30, 31-29, 30-13, 30-27), and to host UMSL, 3-2 (30-28, 30-28, 25-30, 15-30, 15-13).
Junior outside hitter
Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) led the Eagles against SIUE with 18 kills and a .341 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) followed Wells with 15 kills, while freshman defensive specialist
Kristine Wheeler led the team with 12 digs.
Junior setter
Greta Grinstead (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) helped USI to 55 team kills with 46 assists.
In the loss to UMSL, Wells again led the Eagles with 26 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. Gross followed Wells in double-figure kills with 18, while senior middle blocker
Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) added 15 kills in the loss.
USI will return to the road next week when it travels to Grand Valley State University to play in the Amerihost Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, September 2. The Eagles do not play at home until Monday, September 10, when they host Oakland City University.
