Eagles fall to Parkside in rare home loss

The 11th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 70-69, this afternoon at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. It is only the ninth time in the past nine seasons that the Screaming Eagles have lost at the PAC.

USI fought back from a 10-point deficit, with 10 minutes to go in the game, to forge a 66-66 tie with four minutes to go in the contest. Both teams struggled to produce points in the final four minutes but a pair of free throws and a lay up gave the Rangers a 70-66 lead with 2:23 remaining.

Senior forward Marlowe Currie (St. Louis, Missouri) brought the Eagles within two points after connecting on a tough shot inside the paint. Currie finished the game with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Senior center Ronnie Griffin (Louisville, Kentucky) got the Eagles to with in a point, with 43 seconds to go in the game, after connecting on the back-end of a two-shot foul.

After a stop at the other end of the court, the Eagles found themselves with a chance to win it, but had just four seconds on the clock to work with. USI called on Currie to take the final shot but a tough Parkside defense force an off-balance shot that nicked the side of the rim. Griffin could not tip the ball into the net as the clock ran out on USI.

Griffin led all scorers with a career-high 22 points while tying UWP's Brian Maastricht for the game-high in rebounds (12). The 12 boards were also a career best for Griffin.

For the game, USI was held to 39.2 percent shooting from the floor and just 33.3 percent from behind the arc.

The Eagles will try to rebound from the loss as they travel to the University of Indianapolis this Thursday, December 6, and to Northern Kentucky University Friday, December 8. Both games are slated for 6:30 p.m. CST.

After the two-game road trip, the Eagles will return to the PAC, where they have posted a 136-9 record over the past nine seasons, for 11 of their next 13 games.
