Boehmer moves up in record books as Eagles win thriller

Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and senior middle blocker Leah Mercer (Evansville, Indiana) combined for 41 kills and 30 digs as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team won a thrilling 3-2 match at the University of Missouri-St. Louis this evening. Wells tallied a match-high 23 kills while Mercer posted 18 kills and a team-high .372 attacking percentage.

USI dominated the first two games as it racked up a .242 attacking percentage and held UMSL to a .014 attacking percentage. The Screaming Eagles struggled in games three and four, however, and found the match tied at 2-2.

In game five, the Eagles faced a Riverwomen attack that produced a match-high .348 hitting percentage. However, USI held its ground as it won game five 16-14 and the match 3-2.

The Eagles, who raised their record to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, benefited from sophomore setter Kim Boehmer's match-high 51 assists. The Cincinnati, Ohio native climbed into third place all-time in career assists (1,931) at USI.

Mt. Vernon native Greta Grinstead poured in an additional 12 kills while junior outside hitter Krisitina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) and freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) combined for 16 kills and 28 digs.

USI will continue its road trip tomorrow when it heads to Quincy, Illinois to take on the Quincy University Hawks. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
