CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.—Sophomore Carson Brown raced to a first-place finish Friday night to lead University of Southern Indiana Men's Cross Country at the Ohio Valley Conference Preview Meet.
 
Brown overcame hot conditions to finish the eight-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 40.6 seconds, which was 14 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in the 38-competitor field. The victory marked the first win of Brown's collegiate career.
 
As a team, the Screaming Eagles were fourth in the four-team field with 64 points.
 
Sophomore James Haggerty was seventh, and junior Kyle Kern finished 13th to aid USI's efforts, while junior Blake Smith and senior Jackson Collman rounded out USI's top five with respective finishes of 21st and 22nd.
 
USI's displacement runners included junior Andrew Smith and freshman Colin Thomas, who were 25th and 26th, respectively.
 
The Screaming Eagles are back in action next Friday when they compete at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri. The women's 6k is scheduled to start at 8:15 a.m., while the men's 8k is slated for a 9 a.m. start time.
