CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.- University of Southern Indiana Baseball continued its series at Southeast Missouri State University Saturday afternoon, falling 11-1 in seven innings. USI moves to 25-25 overall and 8-15 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
Senior first baseman
Patrick McLellan was the first to get a hit in the opening inning with a single to left field but was left on base. The Redhawks quickly answered with three runs in their turn in the box, coming off two hits in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead.
After the Redhawks tacked on another run in the second inning to push a 4-0 lead, junior second baseman
Parker Martin led off USI's third inning by tallying his second home run of the season to score the only Screaming Eagles run of the game.
The Redhawks' offense was active through every inning, scoring in each inning besides the fifth. Overall, SEMO tallied 11 runs off 10 hits, with 11 runners left on base.
Leading USI's offense was graduate student
Jesse Velders, who went a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Wall and McLellan both went 2-3 at the plate, rounding out the Eagles' eight hits.
The Screaming Eagles' bullpen was active this afternoon, after sophomore pitcher
Ean DiPasquale (4-2) got the start and earned the loss after allowing three runs in the first inning. USI used seven relievers in the contest, combining to allow eight runs in five-plus innings of work. Junior right-handed pitcher
Abdriel Figueroa was a bright spot out of the bullpen, taking the mound in the fourth and fifth innings. Figueroa went 1.1 innings, throwing two strikeouts with no runs allowed.
Southeast Missouri starting pitcher Andrew Carroll (6-3) gave up just the one run with three strikeouts in a complete game effort.
With the loss, the Screaming Eagles remain in the hunt for a spot in the OVC postseason tournament, a half game behind Western Illinois University. The Leathernecks face Morehead State University later Saturday evening.
The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the OVC Championship, which is slated for May 19-23 at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.
