Screaming Eagles down Golden Eagles, 10-5, to win series

USI plays at Evansville Tuesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball took the three-game finale and won the series with a 10-5 victory over Tennessee Tech University Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 25-23 overall and 8-13 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while TTU goes to 17-32, 5-16 OVC.

After TTU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Screaming Eagles scored six unanswered runs to take control of the contest. USI evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the second when senior shortstop Clayton Slack crossed the plate on a squeeze play by senior designated hitter Micajah Wall.

Wall would strike again in the fourth with a two-run single to start a five-run frame. Junior catcher Drue Saenz scored the third run of the frame when junior second baseman Parker Martin reached on an error by the third baseman.

The final two runs of the frame crossed the plate when Wall scored on a bunt single by junior third baseman Collin Senior and Martin scored on a wild pitch for the 6-1 lead.

USI would go on to score three more in the fifth to extend the margin to 9-1. TTU scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to close the gap to 9-4, before USI added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh for the eventual 10-5 winning margin.

Wall led USI at the plate, going two-for-two with three runs scored and three RBI. Junior second baseman Parker Martin tied Wall with three RBI and had a pair of hits.

On the mound, senior left-hander Jake Porter picked up the win in relief. Porter (2-1) allowed one run on no hits and a walk, while striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.

USI senior right-hander Andres Gonzalez started and got a no-decision for the Screaming Eagles. Gonzalez went the first three innings, allowing a run on three hits and four walks, while striking out two.

With the victory, USI remains in the hunt for a spot in the 2026 OVC postseason tournament. The Screaming Eagles are tied with Western Illinois University (8-13 OVC) for eighth in the OVC after the end of today's games, one game behind UT Martin (seventh at 9-12 OVC). USI won the season series with WIU and UTM and would have the tie-breaker with both.

The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the OVC Championship, which is slated for May 19-23 at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.

Up Next for the Screaming Eagles:

USI is on the road for the next four games, beginning Tuesday with a visit to the University of Evansville for a 6 p.m. match-up. The Screaming Eagles took the first meeting of 2026, 14-4, at the USI Baseball Field last month.

The Purple Aces lead the series, 36-23, but USI has won four of the last seven meetings that date back to 2018.

The Screaming Eagles finish the four-game road swing at Southeast Missouri State for a three-game OVC series in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. SEMO is 31-16 overall and 12-9 in the OVC after being swept by Eastern Illinois University this weekend. The Redhawks have lost their last four games and are scheduled to play Austin Peay State Tuesday before hosting USI next weekend.

USI trails the all-time series, 31-28, versus SEMO, but is even, 5-5, against the Redhawks since moving to Division I.
