MOREHEAD, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball came up short at Morehead State University, 4-3, Friday evening at Allen Field in Morehead, Kentucky. USI is 23-19 overall and 6-10 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while MSU goes to 20-21, 6-10 OVC.
Game one of the three-game series opened with the MSU Eagles grabbing a 1-0 lead in the opening inning and pushing it to 2-0 in the third inning. The score would remain 2-0 until the sixth when the Screaming Eagles cut the lead in half, 2-1, with a tally to lead off the frame.
USI senior shortstop
Clayton Slack doubled down the left field line to score senior first baseman
Patrick McLellan from first base for the Screaming Eagles' first run of the contest.
The Screaming Eagles would take the lead briefly in the top of the eighth, 3-2. Slack struck again with a RBI-single to center, scoring junior third baseman
Parker Martin from third. Martin had moved into scoring position by singling, moving to second on a hit by McLellan, and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
McLellan would give USI a 3-2 advantage by scoring a sacrifice bunt by graduate leftfielder/rightfielder
Noah Foster. The 3-2 advantage was short-lived as the MSU Eagles would get the lead back in the bottom half of the eighth on a two-run home run off of USI senior right-hander
Andres Gonzalez for the eventual 4-3 final score.
Gonzalez (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.
USI junior right-hander
Ryan Weller started and picked up a no-decision for the Screaming Eagles. Weller allowed two runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out a season-high seven batters in seven innings.
