EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Softball came from behind in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday to walk off against Southeast Missouri State University in a 4-3 series-opening victory, giving USI Softball Head Coach
Sue Kunkle her 700
th career win at the helm of the Screaming Eagles.
USI Softball (9-15, 6-1 OVC) collected an electric victory in front of many Screaming Eagles alumni in attendance to kick off Alumni Weekend at USI Softball Field. The win was USI's third win in a row and third walk-off victory of the season. Meanwhile, Southeast Missouri (6-19, 2-4 OVC) suffered its sixth consecutive loss.
The Screaming Eagles' walk-off triumph came off the bat of junior infielder
Alyssa Mumaw, who delivered in the clutch with a two-out double to drive in the game-tying and game-winning runs.
Mumaw actually tallied the first RBI of the contest when a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning gave USI a 1-0 advantage. USI's fifth walk of the game chased Redhawks starting pitcher Elliott Stinson, who wound up with a no-decision in one inning of work.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel between the SEMO pitching staff and USI sophomore starting pitcher
Kylie Witthaus. The Redhawks tied the game at one on a sac fly in the top of the fifth.
Southeast Missouri grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth off four straight singles and a fielder's choice. Witthaus, who also ended up with a no-decision and pitched five innings, passed the ball off to freshman pitcher
Elly Robbins.
After Robbins kept the difference at two, USI got one run back to pull within 3-2 in the home half of the sixth when junior infielder
Sydney Long singled home senior outfielder
Caroline Stapleton.
Following a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, the Screaming Eagles went to work on their comeback bid in the bottom half of the frame. A leadoff double and a single put two runners on base. After back-to-back outs, Mumaw stepped up and placed a pitch into the right-center gap for a two-out, two-RBI double for the game-winning heroics, scoring junior outfielder
Kate Satkoski and Robbins.
Mumaw totaled three RBIs in the contest. Satkoski led USI with three hits and two runs scored. The Eagles collectively had six hits, while the Redhawks registered seven hits.
Robbins (5-5) notched her third consecutive win, going back to last weekend at Western Illinois University, after finishing the game with two shutout innings.
SEMO's Maddie Carney (2-8) was charged with the loss after hurling the last 3.1 innings and allowing three runs and two earned.
The Screaming Eagles and Redhawks conclude their series on Sunday with a Noon doubleheader. Both games can be seen with an ESPN+ subscription. Additional coverage and live stat links are available on the USI Softball schedule page on usiscreamingeagles.com.
