USI Men's Soccer travels to Fort Wayne for non-conference finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- University of Southern Indiana Men's Soccer opens its two-game road trip on Tuesday when the Screaming Eagles take on Purdue University Fort Wayne for a 12 p.m. CT contest.

Tuesday's match will not be streamed. To follow along, visit usiscreamingeagles.com.

Last season, the former Great Lakes Valley Conference foes met for the first time since they shared a conference. In 2024, the Mastodons traveled to Strassweg Field, where they won the match 1-0 on a goal scored in the fourth minute. Overall, the Eagles lead the head-to-head series 11-4-1, with their last victory coming in 2000 from a 2-1 overtime thriller.

USI (1-5-0) is coming off a 3-0 loss to Belmont last Wednesday. The Bruins controlled possession early and broke through in the 30th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Despite heavy pressure, USI stayed within reach at halftime, trailing in shots 11-4 and shots on goal 4-1. Sophomore forward David Davila led with two shots, and freshman midfielder Nolan Stevens had the only shot on goal.

In the second half, Belmont added two quick goals and continued to dominate possession. USI managed just two shots after the break, neither on target. Overall, the Eagles were outshot 18-6 and 8-1 on goal. Junior goalkeeper Kael McGowan finished with three saves in 68 minutes, while freshman goalkeeper Jacob English held Belmont scoreless with two saves in the final 22.

On the other side, Fort Wayne (4-0-3) enters Tuesday's contest on a three-match winning streak over Manchester College (September 10), Oakland University (September 13), and Wright State (September 20). In their last match, the Mastodons won a Horizon League matchup with the Raiders 4-2 while graduate forward Shane Anderson recorded his fourth and fifth goals of the season.

Anderson leads the team in assists with five, and is tied for the lead in goals with graduate forward Iann Topete, each having five. Six different Mastodons have recorded a goal this season, while nine have tallied assists. Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Sep Habibi has started all seven matches, making 25 saves while allowing just seven goals.

Following Tuesday's road tilt, USI will be heading to Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Ohio Valley Conference opener against Liberty University. The kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
